What a company weighs

  1. The pest

A wasp nest under an eave is a contained job. Bed bugs and German roaches usually take more time and often a return visit. Termites are a different category again, because of the inspection and the follow-up over the years.

  2. The house

Size matters, and so does how it's built. UGA says construction type affects both where termites get in and how they're found. A crawl space, a slab with expansion joints and a house with finished basement walls all take different work.

  3. How far it has gone

A first sighting usually takes less work than something that has spread between rooms or units. UGA notes a well-established termite infestation may need several treatments.

  4. One visit or a plan

See the next section. In Georgia, termite contracts generally renew each year. UGA says the first treatment typically covers year one, with an annual renewal fee after that.

  5. Getting in and closing up

Sealing rodent gaps, reaching a nest in a wall, or removing debris from a crawl space can add work. Ask whether it's included.

One visit or recurring service

One visit fits a contained problem: a single wasp nest, say. Recurring service fits pests that come back from outdoors, such as Argentine ants, fire ants, mosquitoes and large roaches.

Before signing a plan, ask how often the company comes, what happens if pests show up between visits, how you cancel, and when the price can change. Georgia requires a contract for structural pest services, so get those answers on paper.

Comparing companies

UGA advises against hiring on price alone. Its advice for termite work applies to most pest jobs: ask friends and neighbors about their experience, check the license, ask who will do the inspection and how experienced they are, and ask what they'd do if the first treatment doesn't work.

A written price tied to a written scope is easier to compare than a figure given over the phone.
