How to recognise fleas

Adult fleas live on blood meals. Pet fleas readily bite people, especially when their usual host is away, and the bites are mostly on the legs and ankles. That's why bites can start when a pet is away, or after moving into a home where one lived.

Look for fast, tiny dark insects that jump, especially on pet bedding and carpet. Ticks often come up in the same conversation. If you're finding those too, say so on the call.

Why fleas turn up in Augusta, Georgia

Fleas come in on pets and on wildlife that passes through a yard. CDC notes that fleas avoid sun, and that stored pet food and open trash can draw the animals that carry them. Shade, damp and leaf litter in the yard all help them.

Keeping grass mown and the yard dry reduces the places they do well, and it's work you can start now.

What a flea visit usually involves

Expect a walk through the rooms pets use most, and possibly the yard. The company will likely ask you to vacuum and wash bedding before they come, and to have the pets treated by your vet on the same timeline.

You may keep seeing some fleas for a while, and there may be a follow-up visit. Ask what to expect, how to prepare, and how long people and pets should stay out.

When to call

Call if you've been treating your pets and vacuuming and the bites haven't stopped, or if a home you just moved into has them.

CDC advises talking to your vet about year-round flea products, sweeping or vacuuming well and often, emptying the vacuum outside, and washing pet bedding regularly. See the CDC page.

Fleas: common questions

I don't have pets. How can I have fleas?

Earlier pets in the home or wildlife around the house can bring them. Pet fleas bite people readily when the usual host is gone.

Does the company treat the pet?

No. That's for your vet. The company treats the home or yard, and the two need to line up.

Does this number cover ticks too?

Ask on the call. Some companies treat for ticks alongside fleas.
