How to prepare for a pest control visit

Instructions differ by pest and by company, so ask yours first. These are the questions and small jobs that make a visit go better.

  1. How should I prepare?

    Ask for it in writing or by text if you can. Bed bug and flea visits often come with their own list.

  2. How long should people and pets stay out?

    Ask about anyone at home who's pregnant, has asthma or is very young, and about pets, birds and fish tanks. Go by what the company and the product label say.

  3. What will you use, and where?

    Georgia requires a service record listing the pesticide, EPA registration number and treated areas. You can ask for the product details before the visit too.

  4. Do I need to be there?

    UGA advises being present for a termite inspection, so you can hear the findings first-hand.

Around the house

Clear access to what they need to check: under sinks, behind the stove if it moves, attic hatches and crawl space doors. Put food and dishes away. Note where you've seen pests, and take photos if you can.

Keep a sample if it's easy. A specimen in a sealed jar or a clear photo helps, and your county Extension office can identify it too. Pets should be somewhere comfortable and out of the way.

Afterward

Keep the service record, and ask what you should see over the next few weeks. Some activity after treatment can be normal, depending on the pest. UGA notes termites sometimes swarm after a liquid treatment. Don't clean treated areas unless the company says you can.
